If you're protesting...

It's hard to believe 2020 is half over, especially since most of us haven't lived "normally" for months on end. These are extraordinary times for sure. Obviously, COVID-19 has disrupted everyone's lives in such profound, and oftentimes unexpected ways. But, then we witnessed the brutal and tragic killing of George Floyd, which sparked a nation to rise up and act. People from all walks of life, in every corner of the globe, are protesting systemic racism and injustice. People who have never protested anything before are out marching with homemade signs. Others are bringing their small children to get involved. And others have left their jobs to march everyday, rain or shine. This is a movement that we hope sustains until real policy change occurs.

If you choose to protest, it's important to stay well. Because, if you don't, there will be fewer voices on the street. So, three things to keep in mind:

1- Stay hydrated. It's June, which means it's HOT. As we've discussed before, staying hydrated is important for so many reasons. Water:

- Acts as a universal solvent, dissolving many substances our cell's needs;

- Lubricates and cushions our joints from shock and impact;

- Carries many needed nutrients throughout the body;

- Helps the body regulate temperature;

- Assists in cleansing tissues and blood;

- Participates in the billions of chemical reactions that occur in the body every second.

When I went downtown, there were tables set up with free water and snacks for protesters. But, given the number of people expected on certain days, don't count on that; bring your own (and plenty of it), and drink up.

2- Bring snacks. Some of you are down there for hours at a time, so you'll need to refuel. And of course, any snack is better than no snack. But, if you have a choice, pack snacks that satiating and represent at least two macronutrients. Think nuts, peanut butter, bars, trail mix, etc. And throw in a piece of fruit for good measure.

If you're out marching for more than a few hours, bring a sandwich. But keep it cool, as food left out for more than two hours should be thrown away.

3- Don't forget about COVID-19. COVID-19 is still here and here to stay for a while. It is possible to protest AND still be mindful of the virus. So, bring and use your face masks and hand sanitizer. And keep your distance as much as possible.
